As the purchase of office furniture involves early consultation, design, and long-term door-to-door repair services, it is, in essence, a customized product. This characteristic means that when local governments or organizations procure such furniture, they must consider whether the manufacturer has a local factory or office, as well as the number of sales representatives and after-sales service capabilities available. To ensure reliable support, most purchasing units tend to favor local companies. This preference was particularly evident in the office furniture procurement process in December 2013.
Guangdong-based enterprises have a strong national presence. From a nationwide perspective, Guangdong's office furniture companies are numerous, powerful, and have extensive sales networks. This gives them a significant advantage when serving government users outside the province. Data shows that in regions like Liaoning and Heilongjiang in the northeast, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, and Ningxia in the northwest, as well as Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Fujian in the south, almost all the winning bids for office furniture projects were secured by Guangdong-based companies. It’s even safe to say that wherever there is a project, there is a presence of Guangdong office furniture firms. This trend wasn’t just visible in late 2013—it was consistent throughout the year. According to industry experts, this pattern is expected to continue for some time.
In Guangdong itself, local companies enjoy clear advantages. Government procurement contracts in the province are typically awarded to local businesses, making it difficult for out-of-province companies to gain a foothold. In December 2013, there were 42 office furniture procurement projects in Guangdong, and all the winning suppliers were from within the province.
Office furniture companies also benefit significantly from geographical proximity. While public bidding processes are open to companies nationwide, factors such as on-site installation, quick response times, and after-sales support play a key role in decision-making. Therefore, even if non-local companies offer competitive pricing, local firms with proven quality and service reliability often have the upper hand. This is especially true in cities like Beijing, Tianjin, Henan, Guangxi, Sichuan, and Chongqing.
As the capital, Beijing is home to many central government agencies, local offices, and renowned universities, creating a high demand for office furniture. Local companies are usually given priority in procurement. In December 2013, there were 22 office furniture projects in Beijing, and 20 of them were won by local firms. In Fujian, among 50 furniture procurement projects, 90% went to local companies like Fuzhou Lubanxing Furniture Co., Ltd. and Fujian Minsen Furniture Co., Ltd., with only a few winners coming from Guangdong and Zhejiang.
Similarly, in Henan, Chongqing, and Sichuan, nearly all furniture procurement projects are dominated by local companies. In Guangxi, Guizhou-based firms often win the contracts, sometimes with support from Guangdong or Sichuan companies. Meanwhile, Guizhou’s winning bidders are mainly from Guangdong and Sichuan. These trends highlight the strong regional influence of local furniture manufacturers in government procurement.
