As the purchase of office furniture involves early consultation, design, and later door-to-door repair services, it is, in essence, a customized product. This characteristic means that when localities procure office furniture, they must consider whether the manufacturer has a local factory or office, as well as the number of local sales staff and after-sales service capabilities. To ensure reliable post-sale support, most purchasing units tend to favor local companies. This preference was particularly evident in office furniture procurement in December 2013.
Guangdong enterprises have a strong national presence. From a nationwide perspective, Guangdong-based office furniture companies are numerous, powerful, and have extensive sales networks. This gives them a clear advantage when serving government clients across the country. According to available data, in regions such as Liaoning and Heilongjiang in the northeast, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, and Ningxia in the northwest, as well as Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin in northern China, and Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Fujian in southern China, almost all the winning bidders for office furniture projects were from Guangdong. It's even fair to say that wherever there is a project, there’s a presence of Guangdong furniture companies. This trend wasn’t just visible in December 2013—it remained consistent throughout the year. Experts suggest this pattern will likely continue for some time.
In Guangdong, local companies enjoy significant advantages. Government procurement contracts in the province are typically awarded to local firms, making it difficult for outside companies to secure a share. In December 2013, there were 42 furniture procurement projects in Guangdong, and all the winners were local enterprises.
Office furniture companies also benefit from geographical advantages. While public bidding processes are open to businesses nationwide, in the case of office furniture procurement, factors like on-site installation and 24-hour after-sales support are often considered. Therefore, if a company meets quality standards and offers reliable assurance, local firms are more likely to win bids. This is especially true in cities like Beijing, Tianjin, Henan, Guangxi, Sichuan, and Chongqing.
As the capital of the country, Beijing is home to many central government agencies, offices, and renowned universities. The demand for office furniture in Beijing’s government procurement market is substantial, and local businesses are usually given priority. In December 2013, out of 22 office furniture projects in Beijing, 20 were won by local companies. In the Fujian region, 90% of the 50 furniture procurement projects were won by local firms, with the remaining winners mostly coming from Guangdong and Zhejiang.
Similarly, almost all furniture procurement orders in Henan, Chongqing, and Sichuan are dominated by local companies. In Guangxi, the market is mainly controlled by Guizhou-based firms, though some projects are also won by Guangdong companies. Meanwhile, in Guizhou, the majority of winning suppliers come from Guangdong and Sichuan.
