Application Analysis of High Voltage Frequency Converter in Electric Power Industry

The electric power industry represents a critical application area for high-voltage frequency converter technology. Studies on the adaptability of frequency conversion systems for key auxiliary equipment in power plants reveal that there are approximately seven types of devices per unit that can benefit from frequency conversion. Based on these findings, it is estimated that each unit would require around 13 frequency converters to be installed. According to statistical data, the total capacity of auxiliary motors—such as blowers, induced draft fans, feed pumps, circulating pumps, and slurry pumps—used in China’s thermal power plants reaches 15,000 MW. These motors consume about 52 billion kWh annually, accounting for 5% to 8% of the total power generated by thermal power stations. Currently, most fans and pumps in China’s thermal power plants operate at fixed speeds. This constant-speed operation typically relies on inlet dampers for fans and outlet valves for pumps to regulate flow, which leads to significant throttling losses. Particularly during variable load operations, the efficiency of these systems drops because the fan and pump operations move away from their optimal efficiency points. The traditional method of flow control does not adjust the motor’s rotational speed, so the power consumed remains unchanged, resulting in excessive pressure within the pipeline network. This can negatively impact the safe and stable operation of the system. By using frequency converters to adjust the motor speed and achieve the desired flow rate, substantial energy savings can be realized. Efficient speed control of auxiliary motors directly impacts the overall efficiency of the power plant. Implementing frequency conversion technology not only improves operational efficiency but also enhances the flexibility and reliability of power generation systems, making it a crucial step toward more sustainable and cost-effective power production.
