Sharp Silicon Carbide Power MOSFET Enables Next-Generation Solar Energy Conversion for Delta

The tantalum carbide power MOSFET technology can significantly improve the weight, cost, and efficiency of solar inverters.

CREE (Nasdaq: CREE) and Delta Energy Systems jointly announced a successful plan for the solar inverter (PV inverter) industry. Delta's new-generation solar converter will be used by Cree Silicon (SiC) power MOSFETs are incorporated into the design. The addition of silicon carbide power MOSFETs has enabled the next generation of solar inverters to reach important new milestones in power density, efficiency, and weight.

Klaus Gremmelspacher, director of solar inverter research and development at Delta Energy Systems, commented: “Taida's next-generation solar inverters have reached a new milestone in power density through the use of silicon carbide power MOSFETs. With the goal of an industry-leading, high efficiency new power converter, Cree's silicon carbide power MOSFETs are indispensable."

Cree announced its first silicon carbide power MOSFET in 2011, which has the power to reduce losses and improve the efficiency and power density of solar inverters. The second-generation silicon power MOSFETs with more improved performance will be introduced in 2013. After this landmark product was launched, Delta Energy Systems, one of the world’s largest and most respected power management solutions providers, a subsidiary of Delta Electronics Group, decided to integrate Cree’s silicon carbide. Power MOSFETs are included in the design of next-generation solar inverters. After adopting Cree's 1200V tantalum carbide power MOSFET in an 11kW solar inverter, Delta has been able to expand the DC input voltage range while maintaining or even increasing the highest efficiency of its predecessor. Delta expects the 11kW booster introduced in the second quarter of 2013 because of the use of Cree's tantalum carbide power MOSFETs, whose DC input voltage is increased from 900V to 1000V.

Dr. Scott Allen, senior marketing director of Cree Power, said: “We are pleased and honored that companies such as Delta Energy Systems will become customers of our silicon carbide power MOSFET products. The 1200V and 160m-MOSFETs they are using can quickly be replaced. For perfection, because it is a product released in 2011, and it also has the leading performance and cost advantages of the industry. Customers, such as Delta Electronics, who are engaged in advanced technology, are now actively adopting our silicon carbide power MOSFET technology, which not only enables solar energy. The inverter reduces the size, weight, and cost by 20% to 50% compared to using helium while maintaining or improving the efficiency level."
