Nanotechnology can increase solar cell efficiency by 50%

The decline in solar cell prices has led the industry to find that improving conversion efficiency through technology and finding alternative materials that are cheaper than traditional materials such as wafers are important opportunities for future markets. Nanomaterials, as a technology widely used in various fields such as scientific research and electronics, have also been proved by experts to greatly improve the conversion efficiency of solar cells and significantly reduce costs.

The EU recently approved the implementation of a thin-film solar cell project based on the development and scale-up of low-cost and high-efficiency chalcogenide solar cells based on nanomaterials and processes (SCALENANO). The total project budget is over 10 million euros and the implementation period is February 2012. 1st to 31st July 2015.

The US Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency found that by dissolving sunlight into different parts through the refraction of nanomaterials, allowing solar cells to absorb a specific spectral color can increase the efficiency of solar panels by more than 50%. Despite the significant increase in efficiency, the cost is currently difficult to fall to the level at which it can compete with Crystal.

Duke University material scientist David Smith and colleagues have discovered that nano-blocks scattered on the gold film absorb light and improve solar efficiency. The nano-squares are scattered on the polymer-coated metal material, which absorbs all the sunlight that is irradiated to it, can be produced on a large scale, and can even be used in the home.

In addition, researchers at North Carolina State University said they can use nano-sandwich technology to make thinner thin-film solar cells without affecting the battery's ability to absorb solar energy. At the same time, this will greatly reduce the manufacturing cost of new batteries, and can be widely used in many other solar cell materials, such as cadmium telluride and copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS).
