In recent reports, it has been revealed that the Xiamen Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention carries out monthly random inspections of public direct drinking water quality. To ensure that the water meets national standards, the management units are required to submit a water sample every week. This proactive approach helps maintain high-quality drinking water for the public.
A new solar-powered public drinking fountain was recently installed at the entrance of an underground passage near Robinson Square, opposite the train station. This marks the first solar-powered public drinking fountain in Xiamen, and it's also the first time such solar lighting technology has been used for public direct drinking fountains nationwide. The system automatically illuminates at night, making it easier for residents and tourists to access clean water after dark, significantly boosting the usage rate of these facilities.
This week, four new drinking fountains were officially put into operation. On-site, the new fountains have a more modern and eye-catching design, featuring a solar panel on top. During the day, the panels charge a battery, which then powers the lights at night. The lighting duration can be adjusted automatically, ensuring convenience and energy efficiency.
Wang Gang, General Manager of Xiamen Water Treatment Technology Co., Ltd., mentioned that in addition to the installation at Robinson Square, the new fountains will also be placed at the banking center, ferry terminal, and ferry ticketing office on Xiahe Road. These installations aim to provide free drinking water services for both citizens and visitors.
After the Spring Festival, Xiamen plans to install over 80 such public drinking fountains across major roads, transportation hubs, hospitals, schools, and high-traffic commercial areas. Locations include Xiahe Road, Bailuzhou Road, Hubin South Road, Hubin Bei Road, Jiahe Road, the railway station square, and the ferry terminal. The locations have been largely finalized and are now being submitted for approval by planning, construction, and municipal departments. It is also reported that Xiamen University may soon install one of these fountains, potentially leading to restrictions on bringing bottled water onto campus in the future.
To ensure water safety, Wang Gang explained that the Xiamen CDC conducts monthly water quality tests, while the management unit submits weekly samples. This regular monitoring ensures that the water meets national standards, giving the public confidence in its safety and quality.
