In recent reports, it was revealed that the Xiamen Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention conducts monthly random inspections of public direct drinking water quality. To ensure safety, the management units are required to submit weekly water samples, guaranteeing that the drinking water meets national standards and providing residents and visitors with peace of mind.

A new solar-powered public drinking fountain has recently been installed at the entrance of an underground passage near Robinson Square, opposite the train station. This is the first solar-powered public drinking fountain in Xiamen, and its installation marks a significant step forward in green infrastructure. The fountain not only provides free drinking water but also features automatic lighting at night, making it more accessible and convenient for people after dark.
The design of these new fountains is both modern and functional. A solar panel on top collects energy during the day, which is then stored and used to power the lighting system at night. The illumination can be programmed to turn on automatically, ensuring visibility without unnecessary energy waste.
Wang Gang, the general manager of Xiamen Water Treatment Technology Co., Ltd., confirmed that four new fountains were put into service this week. In addition to the location at Robinson Square, they will be installed at the banking center, ferry terminal, and ticket office on Xiahe Road, offering free access to citizens and tourists alike.
Looking ahead, Xiamen City plans to install over 80 such public drinking fountains across major roads and high-traffic areas, including transportation hubs like the railway station square and ferry terminal, as well as hospitals, schools, and commercial streets. These installations aim to enhance convenience and promote healthier habits among residents and visitors.
Currently, the locations have been finalized and are being submitted for approval by the relevant planning and municipal departments. It’s also reported that Xiamen University will soon install one of these fountains on campus. There are even discussions about potentially restricting the use of bottled water in certain areas in the future to encourage the use of public drinking facilities.
To ensure water safety, the Xiamen CDC conducts monthly water quality tests. The management unit submits a sample every week, maintaining compliance with national standards and allowing the public to drink with confidence.
