The German research institute for solar energy and hydrogen energy, Baden-Württemberg (ZSW), has made a breakthrough in lithium-ion battery technology. According to a recent report from ZSW, the newly developed battery surpasses current international standards in terms of cycle stability—achieving over 10,000 full charge-discharge cycles while retaining more than 85% of its original capacity. This is a major advancement in battery longevity, making it highly promising for long-term applications.
In addition to its impressive cycle life, the battery also performs exceptionally well in other key metrics, such as power density. It reaches up to 1100 watts per kilogram, which is on par with the best batteries currently produced by leading Asian manufacturers. The active materials used in this battery are sourced exclusively from German companies, highlighting the country's growing expertise in advanced battery technology.
ZSW has already designed the battery and developed a production process, starting with the 18650 format. They have produced a small batch of samples for further testing. The research team is now working on scaling up the technology to create larger pouch and prismatic batteries, which could be used in electric vehicles and renewable energy storage systems.
Dr. Margret Wohlfahrt-Mehren, head of the Battery Materials Research Department at ZSW, emphasized that after 10,000 cycles, the battery still retains more than 85% of its capacity. She added that this level of performance makes the battery ideal for automotive use, where long service life is essential. A lithium-ion battery with such durability can support an electric vehicle for at least 10 years, maintaining over 80% of its rated energy capacity.
ZSW’s work is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWi). The project is being conducted at the Battery Technology Laboratory (eLaB) in Ulm, where the battery is semi-automatically produced. This collaboration allows companies to access new materials and processes without disrupting their existing production lines.
Looking ahead, ZSW aims to partner with industry leaders to develop electrodes for large-scale prismatic batteries. While large-scale manufacturing remains a goal, Dr. Wohlfahrt-Mehren stresses that mastering current cutting-edge technology and ensuring high-quality production are equally important steps in the process. This innovation marks a significant milestone in the global race for sustainable energy solutions.
