Application of machining center workpiece measuring system in FANUC

This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the installation, commissioning, probe calibration, and practical application examples of the Renishaw OMP60 workpiece measuring system in a horizontal machining center equipped with a FANUC control system. The OMP60 is an advanced optical probing system designed for medium to large machining centers, offering enhanced resistance to light interference and improved reliability. It is compatible with existing OMI-2 and OMI receivers, making it a valuable upgrade for users of older models such as MP7, MP8, MP9, and MP10. The system utilizes a wireless AA battery that lasts over six months, minimizing machine downtime and maintenance costs. The software installation process involves renaming files starting with "O97" and "O98" in the FANUC system, followed by copying specific installation files into the system. Parameter settings include adjusting the probe retraction distance and detection feed rate using macro programs like O9836, where #506 represents the retraction distance and #119 the feed rate. Tool type settings are also configured within macro program O9724, with parameter #120 set to 9 for compatibility with the factory’s horizontal machining center. Calibration of the probe is essential for accurate workpiece measurement. This process includes checking the physical length error, eccentricity on the X and Y axes, and the ball radius. Before calibration, the workpiece must be prepared with a milled surface and a precisely measured hole. The calibration procedure involves a series of G-code commands that guide the probe through various positions to determine offsets and ball diameter. After calibration, the system variables #500 (XRAD), #501 (YRAD), #502 (XOFF), and #503 (YOFF) are checked to ensure accuracy. In practical applications, the system is used to establish the workpiece coordinate system, detect Z-axis zero points, and measure internal holes. If the detected values exceed tolerances, alarms are triggered, and data is saved for quality tracking. This ensures consistent and reliable part inspection, reducing errors and improving overall productivity. Overall, the implementation of the Renishaw OMP60 system in FANUC-controlled horizontal machining centers significantly enhances efficiency, lowers production costs, and reduces scrap rates, making it a valuable addition to modern manufacturing environments.
