Use of the Inner Ring of Used Rolling Bearings in Blanking Dies

In blanking dies, round hole punches and circular blanking dies are commonly used. These molds typically use high-quality carbon tool steel (such as T7A, T8A, T10A, etc.) for the punch and die components. However, these materials are expensive and require quenching and other processing steps, which significantly increase the cost of the mold. Many factories have old rolling bearings that are discarded due to issues like pitting on the balls or rolling grooves, or cracks in the cage. However, the inner and outer rings of these bearings are often still intact and made from high-quality chromium bearing steel such as GCr15, GCr9SiMn, GCr15SiMn, GCr9, and GSiMnV. These materials have excellent hardness (usually between 60–64 HRC) and can be reused effectively. By repurposing these inner and outer rings, manufacturers can save costs, reduce production time, and improve efficiency. When using the inner and outer rings of a bearing as punches or dies, it's important to choose the right dimensions. The outer diameter (d1) is usually used when the ring serves as a punch, while the inner diameter (d) is used when it acts as a die. For the outer ring, the outer diameter (D) becomes the punch size, and the inner diameter (D1) becomes the die size. It’s essential to adjust these dimensions slightly to match the required punching or blanking size. Since the dimensions of used bearings vary, it may be challenging to find the exact size needed. Therefore, it's recommended to collect and record various used bearings regularly. This allows for quick reference when designing new molds. When creating drawings, it's also helpful to refer to existing bearing sizes to determine the appropriate hole or blanking dimensions. The edges of the bearing rings have rounded arcs (r), but for punches and dies, sharp edges are necessary. To achieve this, the arc should be ground down on a surface grinder. Additionally, when using the outer ring as a punch, the lower part of the die must be ground to allow smooth ejection of the workpiece. A typical parameter (c) of 1–1.5 mm is ground on the outer ring. If the inner ring is used as a die, the inner edge should also be adjusted accordingly. For installation, the inner and outer rings of the bearing are typically mounted using an interference fit (P7/h6 for punches and H7/p6 for dies). The length of the mounting section should match the thickness of the bearing’s inner and outer parts. The lower end of the mold shank is often riveted for stability. After riveting, the end should be flattened. For female molds, the depth of the mounting hole should be slightly larger than the width of the bearing after machining to ensure proper assembly. Using the inner and outer rings of used bearings as punches and dies is not only an effective way to recycle waste but also helps reduce material costs. By reusing these high-quality components, manufacturers can save on expensive tool steels and streamline the mold-making process. This approach is both practical and environmentally friendly, making it a valuable technique in modern manufacturing.
