In recent years, the Guangdong Provincial Bureau of Quality Supervision released an announcement titled "Announcement on the Quality Status of Guangdong Province’s Regular Supervision and Inspection of 7 Kinds of Products such as Wooden Furniture in 2013." This report highlighted several furniture brands that failed quality inspections due to non-compliance with safety standards.
Among the listed brands were Yuting, Meibao Meiluo, Moore Manor, Keechang, Jinpinju, Lixing, Pinbiao, Libang, Yidongfang, Hengze, Jiajiale, Lyon style, Yicaijuju, Sen Labao, and many others. These brands were placed on the black list for exceeding formaldehyde emissions. Meanwhile, Novartis and Cityscape were also found non-compliant, but for different reasons—excessive heavy metal content. Most of these manufacturers are based in cities like Guangzhou, Dongguan, Foshan, Shenzhen, and Zhongshan, which are key centers for furniture production in China.
The inspection covered seven product categories, including wooden furniture, interior and exterior wall paints, and metal materials. In 2013, the Guangdong Provincial Quality Supervision Bureau conducted regular provincial-level supervision on these products. For example, a bedside cabinet from Dongguan Novartis Furniture Co., Ltd. was listed as unqualified due to failing two tests: heavy metal content and carpentry requirements. Similarly, a chair from Dongguan Yongxin Furniture Manufacturing Co., Ltd. was found non-compliant because its formaldehyde emissions exceeded limits.
Guangdong has long been the core of China’s furniture industry, known as “Chinese furniture looks at Guangdong†and “world furniture is made in Guangdong.†However, even well-known brands have faced scrutiny. The issue seems to be rooted in the supply chain, where some suppliers provide substandard materials, leading to poor-quality finished products.
When contacted by China Quality Miles, representatives from both companies acknowledged the issues. Wang Yayun, general manager of Novartis Furniture, confirmed that the unqualified products had been recalled and discontinued. He attributed the problem to the supplier's materials, noting that mixing during the paint process led to high heavy metal content. On the other hand, Hu Yuexiang from Yongxin Furniture stated that the problematic batch had not been sold yet, but the issue stemmed from composite boards used in the seat plates.
Industry insiders pointed out that the main cause of non-compliance lies in the raw materials, particularly wood-based panels. Some manufacturers opt for cheaper, low-quality materials to reduce costs, which directly affects product quality. This trend is partly driven by intense price competition, making it difficult for smaller or less-regulated companies to maintain high standards.
With an unqualified rate of 11.6%, the findings raised serious concerns about the overall quality of Guangdong-made furniture. Experts suggest that consumers should be cautious when purchasing furniture, especially from lesser-known brands. Well-established brands tend to be more rigorous in material selection and craftsmanship to protect their reputations.
As the demand for safe and eco-friendly furniture grows, the need for stricter quality control and transparency across the supply chain becomes increasingly important. Whether Guangdong can maintain its reputation as the “world factory†depends heavily on how effectively these issues are addressed.
