In recent years, the Guangdong Provincial Bureau of Quality Supervision released the "Announcement on the Quality Status of Guangdong Province’s Regular Supervision and Inspection of 7 Kinds of Products such as Wooden Furniture in 2013." The report highlighted several issues with the quality of furniture produced in the region.
Among the brands that failed the inspection were Yuting, Meibao Meiluo, Moore Manor, Keechang, Jinpinju, Lixing, Pinbiao, Libang, Yidongfang, Hengze, Jiajiale, Lyon Style, Yicaijuju, Sen Labao, and many others. These brands were placed on the black list due to excessive formaldehyde emissions. Meanwhile, Novartis and Cityscape faced similar issues but for different reasons—unqualified heavy metal content.
Most of these manufacturers are based in key cities in Guangdong, including Guangzhou, Dongguan, Foshan, Shenzhen, and Zhongshan. This concentration raises concerns about the overall quality control within the industry.
The Guangdong Provincial Quality Supervision Bureau conducted regular provincial-level inspections on products such as wooden furniture, interior and exterior wall paints, and metal materials. In 2013, a number of unqualified items were identified, including a bedside cabinet from Dongguan Novartis Furniture Co., Ltd. with the trademark "Nova Novartis." The product failed two critical tests: heavy metal content and carpentry requirements. Another item, a chair from Dongguan Yongxin Furniture Manufacturing Co., Ltd. under the brand "Yuting," was also found to have excessive formaldehyde emissions.
Guangdong is considered the heart of China's furniture industry, known for its production, distribution, and export activities. The phrase "Chinese furniture looks at Guangdong" reflects its dominance in the domestic market. However, the recent quality issues raise questions about whether this reputation is still well-deserved.
When questioned about the situation, Wang Yayun, general manager of Novartis Furniture, stated that the unqualified products had been recalled according to procedure. He attributed the problem to the supplier’s materials, noting that the paint and board used may have contained higher than acceptable levels of heavy metals. Similarly, Hu Yuexiang from Yongxin Furniture explained that the affected batch had been stopped and not sold, citing supplier management loopholes as the main cause.
Industry experts suggest that the root of the problem lies in the use of low-quality raw materials, such as substandard wood panels. Price competition often drives companies to choose cheaper materials, which can compromise the final product's safety and durability. According to insiders, the 11.6% non-conformity rate is not surprising, as there are likely many more untested products still on the market.
As consumers become more aware of these issues, they are advised to be cautious when purchasing furniture. Experts recommend choosing well-known brands and reputable stores, as these tend to maintain stricter quality standards. While the "world factory" label once symbolized reliability, the current situation in Guangdong calls for greater scrutiny and awareness among both manufacturers and buyers.
