Last night, the 5-day Guzhenmen Lantern Festival kicked off with a vibrant display of lights. Despite occasional drizzle or snowflakes in the air, the event drew large crowds who came to admire the dazzling lanterns. Many of the lights were creatively integrated into the surrounding streetscape, creating an intimate and immersive atmosphere. This year's festival coincided with Valentine's Day, adding a romantic touch to the celebrations. As a result, items like rose-themed jewelry and LED lamps became popular, especially the new rose-shaped energy-saving lamps that lit up with colorful hues—bright reds and soft pinks. These lamps caught the attention of both young women and children, with many taking them home as souvenirs.
Rain or snow didn’t deter people from coming out. Couples, families, and friends gathered together, enjoying the festive mood. Alongside the lights, various stalls offered toys, accessories, and snacks, drawing even more visitors. A small crystal ball for just a few dollars was sold one by one, while nearby stands selling traditional sugar figures were packed with eager customers. Among the most popular items were the 12 Chinese Zodiac sugar figurines, which attracted both adults and kids.
In addition to the lights, there was also a riddle-guessing activity scheduled to start at 2 p.m., but the crowd arrived early, leading the event to begin about 20 minutes ahead of schedule. Staff members said they had prepared 5,000 riddles, and over 600 tickets were distributed daily during the festival, with even more on the main day.
This year’s festival is the largest in recent years, featuring 13 large-scale lantern groups and over 3,000 individual lanterns. Each group covers more than 50 square meters, showcasing innovative designs and artistic creativity. The exhibition includes 11 different light displays from streets such as Minjiang and Chengbei in Gusu District, making it a must-see event for locals and tourists alike. Overall, the festival blended tradition with modern flair, offering something for everyone to enjoy.
