Last night, the 5-day Guzhenmen Lantern Festival kicked off. Though light rain and snowflakes occasionally drifted through the air, it didn’t stop people from gathering to admire the vibrant lights. The festival’s lanterns, especially those integrated with the surrounding streetscape, created a warm and intimate atmosphere. This year, the Lantern Festival coincided with Valentine’s Day, adding an extra romantic touch. As a result, rose-themed decorations and jewelry caught many visitors’ attention. Among them, the rose-shaped LED energy-saving lamps were particularly popular—not only did young women admire them, but children also showed great interest in them.
Despite the chilly weather, crowds gathered to enjoy the event. Couples strolled hand in hand, while families with children roamed the area. Alongside the lights, various stalls selling toys, accessories, and snacks attracted even more attention. A small crystal ball for just a few dollars was sold quickly, while the sugar art booth was packed with eager customers.
This year’s festival also featured traditional zodiac sugar figurines, with the 12 Chinese Zodiac characters being the most popular. Some clever merchants introduced new products, like the rose-shaped LED lamps that lit up in multiple colors, including red and pink. Many visitors, including both adults and kids, bought them as gifts or souvenirs. One visitor, a first-grade student named Ma Ma, even bought a crystal ball with her grandfather, who was delighted to join in the fun.
In addition to the lights, the festival included a riddle guessing activity. Originally scheduled to start at 2 p.m., the event began about 20 minutes early due to the overwhelming turnout. Staff members said they had prepared 5,000 riddles, and over 600 tickets were distributed daily during the festival, with even more on the Lantern Festival itself.
This year’s Guzhenmen Lantern Festival is the largest in recent years, featuring 13 large-scale lantern displays and over 3,000 individual lanterns. Each group of lights covers more than 50 square meters, showcasing innovative designs. The exhibition spans 11 streets in Gusu District, including Minjiang Street and Chengbei Street, making it a true visual spectacle for all to enjoy.
