Since the outbreak of the H7N9 bird flu, public attention has shifted away from the term "avian" in recent discussions. At yesterday's press conference, experts emphasized that current human cases of H7N9 are sporadic and not widespread, with no evidence of human-to-human transmission. Therefore, there is no need for excessive concern.
Xie Guoxiang, deputy director of the Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, explained that Banlangen is a traditional herbal medicine used to treat symptoms rather than prevent illness. He pointed out that H7N9 is a novel virus, and taking Banlangen as a preventive measure is not supported by scientific evidence. "There is currently no confirmed effectiveness of Banlangen against H7N9, so it is not recommended for general prevention," he said.
In response to public concerns, some citizens have started wearing masks when going out. However, Xie clarified that masks are primarily for personal protection and are not necessary under normal circumstances. Since there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission, and the virus is mostly found in isolated cases, wearing a mask is not required unless one is caring for someone who is sick.
Regarding household disinfection, Xie advised that the H7N9 virus is sensitive to heat and can be effectively neutralized using chlorine-based disinfectants. If families wish to disinfect their homes, they should consult the 12320 public health hotline or contact local CDC offices for professional guidance. However, if there are no patients at home and no signs of infection, unnecessary disinfection measures are not needed.
Experts also reminded the public that H7N9 originates from poultry. To reduce risk, people should avoid direct contact with live or dead birds and their droppings. If someone encounters bird droppings, they should not clean them directly with their hands. Taking these precautions can help minimize exposure to the virus.
Overall, while the situation requires vigilance, it does not call for panic. Following expert advice and maintaining good hygiene practices remain the best ways to stay safe during this time.
