Machine Tool Accuracy Constrains Development of Wind Power Equipment

Wind farm equipment mainly includes the following parts: gearbox (speed increase box), generator set, blades, tower base and substation. At present, wind power generation gradually develops into high-power generating units, requiring high reliability and a long life cycle. Therefore, the accuracy and function of components are very high.

With the development of wind power technology, the principle and structure of wind turbines are also changing. The future wind turbines will develop in the direction of simplification of the structure and volume reduction. At present, China is developing gearless wind turbines. For example, the Power Generation Equipment Engineering Research Center of Harbin Power Generation Equipment Group has developed a variable-gear variable-speed pitch permanent magnet wind turbine generator, and is developing a variable-speed constant-frequency wind turbine generator and a direct-drive variable-speed wind turbine, which can replace the transmission with a gearbox. The asynchronous generator set has the advantages of low manufacturing cost, reliable operation, and easy maintenance, and has independent intellectual property rights.

At present, there is a large number of gearbox wind turbine generators. Due to the complex structure, the manufacture of various components requires the processing of different machine tools.

The gearbox of the wind turbine is mainly composed of a box body, a planetary gear train and a transmission mechanism. The gearbox body of the fan is a large box body, and its diameter is about 2 to 3 meters depending on the amount of power generation, and most of it is a split structure. Machining requires a CNC-boring milling and boring machine with a boring bar diameter of about 160-250mm, a large-scale horizontal machining center, and a gantry machining center. The machining accuracy is required to be high. At present, the main equipment used is imported equipment.

The gears in the gearboxes have a large amount of processing, and mass production of large ring gears, spur gears, and helical gears is required. The main processing equipment is large CNC vertical gear hobbing machine, CNC gear shaping machine, CNC gear grinding machine and so on. Among these gear processing machine tools, large-scale CNC gear machine tools are generally required to have the features of high efficiency, heavy load, heavy cutting, and good rigidity, mainly relying on imports, and small and medium-sized domestic equipment. Among them, the large-size, large-modulus gears and ring gears use numerically-controlled gear milling machines and CNC-controlled gear grinding machines. The CNC-controlled gear milling machines require large depth of cut, large feed, and high rolling speed. The CNC forming grinding machine requires a precision of 5 or more, high degree of automation, auto-aligning, automatic measurement, automatic modification, and high stability. At present, the main manufacturers of wind turbine gearboxes in China are Nanjing Gaojing Gear Co., Ltd. The production task of the plant is very busy. It can not meet the market demand completely after long-term three shifts. Therefore, the processing equipment is required to be stable and reliable. At present, the gear processing machine tool used in this factory is basically imported equipment.

The principle and structure of generators for wind power are basically the same as those of other generators such as thermal power generators. Most of the wind power generators use kilowatt-class generators, compared to the 10,000 kilowatt-class generators used in thermal power generation, and belong to different grades of generating units. From the point of view of manufacturing, it is not too difficult. Enterprises that can manufacture thermal power generators generally meet the requirements for manufacturing wind power generators. However, wind generators require a service life of more than 20 years, and require higher stability and reliability.

Most of the fan blades are made of composite materials such as epoxy glass fiber or carbon fiber. The blade design mainly adopts full three-dimensional aerodynamic simulation and structural finite element simulation, and the vacuum infusion process is used for blade production. Less machining, some need punching and forming.

The blade pitch mechanism mainly includes pitch motor, reducer and pitch controller. There are no special requirements for manufacturing equipment. Domestic machine tools can meet the demand.

The main components of the yaw mechanism are large bearings with internal and external teeth and 4 pinions and transmissions. This kind of large-sized bearing cannot be manufactured at present in China, mainly depends on imports. The domestic Tianma Group will develop and manufacture large-sized bearings for the yaw mechanism. Its processing equipment is mainly some high-demanding special machine equipment. For example, at the CCMT2008 exhibition, Qizhong Heavy CNC Equipment Co., Ltd. exhibited three large-scale CNC machine tools, which are equipment for processing and manufacturing large wind power gears.

  • The greater the number of cutters, the smoother the tool will run.
  • The greater the number of cutters, the greater the cost.
  • The greater the number of cutters, the longer the cutters will last
Rotary Speed - Maximum speed is determined by the manufacturer's recommendation and the calculation to account for the linear distance the cutter is moving per revolution.

Hole Cleaning - A frequently over looked point of hole opener operation is hole cleaning. The volume of cuttings to remove from a hole increase by a squared factor with an increase in hole diameter.
