Researchers from the University of Utah have made a breakthrough in solar technology by developing a multicolor thin film that enhances light absorption. This transparent layer, integrated into the cover of solar panels, has the potential to boost the overall efficiency of solar cells to an impressive 50%.
Traditional solar cells are limited in their ability to capture light, as they can only effectively absorb a narrow range of wavelengths. In contrast, the new design by Rajesh Menon, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Peng Wang, a graduate student in electrical engineering, introduces a multicolor layer that allows for broader light absorption. This innovation increases the conversion efficiency of photovoltaic cells by 16%, marking a significant improvement in performance.
To test their concept, the team created a multicolor computer simulator featuring eight different absorber layers. The results were promising—showing a theoretical efficiency gain of 50% when compared to conventional solar cells. "These colors can be absorbed by suitable solar cells, improving battery efficiency without increasing costs," Menon explained.
The multicolor layer measures 10 mm in length and 50 mm in width, with a 3 micrometer-wide groove designed to reflect incoming light. It is primarily manufactured using theoretical photolithography, but the process is cost-effective. The researchers suggest that it could be mass-produced like a DVD, by creating a multi-color mold and stamping it out.
Looking ahead, the University of Utah plans to collaborate with solar cell manufacturers to bring this high-efficiency technology to market within the next 5 to 10 years. Additionally, Menon and his team aim to test the technology at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, further validating its potential on a larger scale.
