European rebar bottoms, steel market remains weak

European rebar bottoms, steel market remains weak The European steel market continues to face downward pressure due to weak demand, keeping prices under pressure. The CRU price index for the region remained flat at 175.0 this week, up slightly by 0.5% from last month but down 7.2% compared to the same period last year. This reflects a broader trend of softness across various steel products. In the coil sector, demand has continued to weaken, especially in the Nordic region. Hot rolled coils are currently trading between 500–505 euros per ton, with some deals as low as 485–490 euros. Cold rolled coils are priced between 560–600 euros, with buyers pushing for lower offers. In Southern Europe, hot rolled coils are available at 475–485 euros, while cold rolled coils range from 550–560 euros. Despite strong order books for April and May, some suppliers are offering discounts to maintain sales. This suggests that the market is likely to remain weak in the short term. Moving to slabs, the European plate market is also struggling. Local mills are quoting around 530–545 euros per ton, while imported slabs from China have dropped to 500 euros (CIF), down from 510 euros. CIS and Indian slabs are available at 435–462 euros (FOB). Although there’s no clear sign of recovery in local demand, southern Europe’s low inventory levels and expectations of new projects in Northern Europe later this year may provide some support. However, the heavy plate market is expected to remain stable or see a slight upward trend in the near future. Rebar prices have hit bottom, particularly in Italy, where arrival prices have fallen to 450–460 euros per ton. German and French rebar prices are around 500–510 euros, while Spanish rebar stands at 490–500 euros. Due to the extremely low prices, some Italian steel mills have stopped quoting, while others have started to raise prices by 20 euros. The latest factory price now stands at 470–480 euros. With rising scrap prices and reduced steel supply, the Italian rebar market is showing early signs of stabilization, and other European markets may follow suit soon. Finally, in the steel section, prices have continued to decline. In the Nordic region, type 1 steel arrived at 585–590 euros per ton, with some transactions hitting as low as 580 euros. Small sections are trading at 540–550 euros. In Southern Europe, type 1 steel ex-factory prices fell from 570–590 euros to 540 euros, while small sections are now available at 510–530 euros. With demand for long products still weak and prices at historic lows, some steel mills have begun to halt production to avoid further losses. Looking ahead, the supply-demand balance is expected to improve, leading to a more stable steel price environment.
