**Science and Technology News** On April 16th, a tragic shipwreck occurred on South Korea's "Times" passenger ship, resulting in numerous casualties, including several Chinese nationals. This incident came shortly after the Malaysia Airlines plane crash, which had already drawn global attention. In the aftermath of the accident, search and rescue teams made extensive use of advanced technological tools, significantly boosting the efficiency of their operations.
Most people are familiar with the communication devices used by rescuers, such as walkie-talkies. However, in underwater environments or areas where verbal communication is difficult, visual methods become essential. To address this, Norwegian scientists have recently introduced a high-tech communication jacket that combines functionality with wearable technology, making it easier for rescuers to stay connected.
Developed in collaboration with students from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, the jacket integrates electronic components into the fabric, including a small LCD screen on the sleeve. The goal is for every team member to wear the jacket, enabling seamless communication between rescuers and their leaders.
When a message is sent from a phone or computer, the jacket receives it and alerts the user via a beeper on the collar. The information can then be read directly on the screen, allowing for quick and efficient communication.
While smartphones can perform similar tasks, firefighters often prefer not to pull out their phones for every message. Additionally, during major disasters, mobile networks may be unreliable or completely down. The SINTEF Jacket uses a private Wi-Fi Direct system, allowing messages to be transmitted between jackets within a 50-meter range. Originally designed for social media platforms like Facebook, this technology now shows promise in emergency communications.
However, current versions of the jacket still lack the ability to send or reply to messages. Future improvements could include voice communication, making the device even more versatile and practical for real-time coordination in high-stress situations. I'm excited to see how this technology will evolve and support first responders in the field.
