SPDM Robot Installs New Battery on International Space Station

According to foreign media reports, robots on the International Space Station (ISS) recently took over the work of upgrading space station solar power systems. Under the control of ground personnel, the Dextre Special Purpose Flexible Manipulator (SPDM) robot manufactured by Canada's MacDonald Dettwiler Company successfully replaced the old Lithium-Ion battery used in 1998 with the assistance of an astronaut without a spacewalk. battery.

NASA stated that in this mission, the robot needed to dismantle the four old nickel-metal hydride batteries previously used on the ISS, and installed three new lithium-ion batteries on the 3A power channel of the starboard 4-truss Integrated Electronic Components (IEA). Once the mission is completed, three of the old batteries will be stored on the external tray of the Japanese H-II transfer aircraft, and the fourth battery will be stored on Dextre's work platform.

However, NASA revealed that Shane Kimbroug, the commander of Expedition 50 of the International Space Station (ISS), and Peggy Whitson, NASA flight engineer, will still perform space missions on Friday. Kimbroug and Whitson will continue to install three adapter boards in the IEA slot. Subsequently, Dextre will continue to install three new lithium-ion batteries on the starboard 4 truss IEA's 1A power channel, replacing the previous five old NiMH batteries.

In the end, 48 original batteries on the International Space Station will be replaced by 24 smaller, more efficient lithium-ion batteries. The new battery will power the four giant solar arrays on the International Space Station.
