Sweet Snowball Care Tips

Humidity Control: Sweet snowball prefers a dry environment. Prolonged rain can increase the risk of bacterial infections. Keep it away from direct rainfall and ensure the leaves stay dry at night. The ideal relative humidity is between 40% and 60%.

Temperature Regulation

This plant thrives in cooler conditions and is not tolerant of extreme heat or cold. During winter, it can survive as long as it isn’t exposed to frost. In late spring and early summer, when temperatures rise above 30°C, the optimal growth temperature is between 15°C and 25°C. It's best to plant it in autumn or winter to avoid the intense summer heat. In late autumn, winter, and early spring, when temperatures are milder, provide it with full sunlight to support photosynthesis, flower bud development, and blooming. If summer temperatures are high, use a 50% shade cloth. After flowering, if you move it indoors for preservation, place it near east-facing windows to extend the blooming period and encourage more flowers.

Lighting Needs

Fertilizer Management: Like other grasses, sweet snowball requires regular watering and nutrients but is sensitive to over-fertilization. Avoid using too much fertilizer or applying excessive nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium at once. Follow the principle of "frequent but light" feeding and maintain a balance between wet and dry periods. After fertilizing, make sure the leaves and flowers remain dry overnight.

Autumn Care: Once the seedlings have recovered, start a regular watering and fertilizing schedule. Alternate between "fertilizer" (Huabao) and "clear water" (Qingshui) in a cycle, such as: Huabao – Huabao – Qingshui – Huabao – Huabao – Qingshui. The interval between each step should be about 1–3 days, depending on the weather. On sunny or hot days, the interval is shorter, while on rainy or cool days, it may be longer or skipped.

Winter Maintenance: Although the plant continues to grow during winter, its growth slows down due to lower temperatures. Reduce both water and fertilizer amounts, and even stop fertilizing if needed. Use a cycle of Huabao – Qingshui – Qingshui – Huabao – Qingshui – Qingshui, with intervals of about 4–7 days. On sunny or warm days, shorten the interval, while on rainy or cold days, it may be extended or skipped. Water it during the warmest part of the day, preferably at noon on sunny days.

Spring Care: As temperatures rise, the plant resumes active growth and enters the flower bud formation and blooming phase. At this time, it needs more water and nutrients. Follow a cycle of Huabao – Qingshui – Huabao – Qingshui, with intervals of 2–4 days. On sunny or hot days, the interval is shorter, while on rainy or cool days, it may be longer or skipped. Stop fertilizing once the fruiting stage begins.

Pruning Tips

During the flowering period, remove spent flowers that have three leaves attached to help extend the blooming period.
