Voice of Russia: China's energy transportation achieves a breakthrough

Abstract According to an article published by "Russian Voice" radio station on June 5th, titled "China-Myanmar Natural Gas Pipeline: A New Route for Energy Supply," the China-Myanmar natural gas pipeline is set to transport gas directly from the western coast of Myanmar to Yunnan Province in China. The construction of the pipeline has been completed, and it is expected to be operational within 2 to 3 months.

The pipeline project, which spans from the western coast of Myanmar to the border with Yunnan, has already reached its final stage. In the coming months, the parallel oil pipeline will also be connected, marking a major energy infrastructure milestone.

Despite local opposition and protests during the pipeline’s construction, as well as efforts by the U.S., Japan, and the European Union to curb China’s growing influence in Myanmar, the project was successfully completed. This marks a significant energy breakthrough for China, allowing direct access to resources from the Indian Ocean through Myanmar.

Both Washington and Tokyo have recently lifted sanctions against Myanmar, signaling their intention to respond to China's progress in the region. Valery Kistanov, director of the Center for Japanese Studies at the Far East Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, noted that "Myanmar is emerging as a key player in the Asia-Pacific. The geopolitical competition between China, the U.S., and Japan is intensifying, each with its own strategic interests in the country." He added that the U.S. and Japan are lifting sanctions in an attempt to counterbalance China’s expanding presence. Meanwhile, China has taken advantage of Myanmar’s long-standing isolation due to Western sanctions, actively engaging in infrastructure development and financial support.

As a result, Myanmar has become one of China’s key partners in the region. The natural gas and oil pipelines offer China a direct route to energy supplies without relying on the strategically sensitive Strait of Malacca, controlled by the U.S.

Strategically, the two pipeline projects are crucial for China. Once fully operational, they could reduce the risk of a potential U.S. naval blockade of Middle Eastern oil routes in the event of a conflict. While the projects have faced local resistance, especially from farmers who demand fair compensation for land use, Chinese companies have adopted tactics similar to those used by Western firms—focusing on public welfare initiatives to ease tensions and build trust with local communities.
