1. Any procedure that may generate toxic or irritating gases must be conducted inside a fume hood. Examples of such gases include carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen chloride, carbon dioxide, chlorine, iodine, sulfur dioxide, manganese oxide, and nitrogen dioxide. Using a fume hood helps protect both the operator and the environment from harmful exposure.
2. When working with toxic substances, it is essential to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as masks, face shields, and gloves. Always wash your hands thoroughly after completing the experiment. Eating, drinking, or smoking in the lab is strictly prohibited to prevent accidental ingestion of hazardous materials.
3. All solutions that have come into contact with toxic substances must be disposed of properly by trained personnel. They should be treated according to local regulations and only discharged into the sewer system if they meet the required safety standards. After disposal, all equipment and work areas should be cleaned and decontaminated.
4. If workers have any cuts, abrasions, or open wounds on their hands, face, or skin, they should not perform any toxic operations, especially those involving hydrides, which can be highly reactive and dangerous.
5. Never use your mouth to suck up toxic liquids, wastewater, or corrosive substances. Instead, always use a proper suction device or pipette to handle these materials safely.
6. When handling unknown chemicals, never taste them. To detect the smell, gently waft the vapors toward your nose using your hand. Never hold food, drinks, or any personal items in containers within the laboratory.
