Abstract Hardide Coatings, a UK-based company, has made a significant breakthrough by developing an advanced coating technology that enhances the durability and performance of drilling tools in high-wear conditions. This innovation marks the first successful application of a heat-resistant polycrystalline (TSP) diamond coating designed to withstand extreme temperatures, heavy loads, and corrosive environments.
The new coating is specifically engineered for use in demanding applications such as horizontal directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing, where traditional materials often fail due to intense abrasion and chemical exposure. By improving tool life and efficiency, this development opens up new possibilities for oil and gas operations in more challenging and economically marginal regions.

According to Philip Kirkham, CEO of Hardide Coatings, "Modern drilling operations are pushing into deeper and more hostile environments than ever before. Conventional wear-resistant materials are no longer sufficient to protect critical components from excessive wear and corrosion." He added, "By introducing this new coating, we're not only extending the life of drilling equipment but also reducing maintenance costs and downtime, which is crucial for maintaining economic viability in mature fields like the North Sea."
One of the main challenges in using diamond for wear resistance is its susceptibility to oxidation and graphitization, which limits its effectiveness in brazing applications. Previous attempts to overcome these issues have fallen short, primarily due to poor adhesion between the coating and the diamond material. Hardide-D addresses this by using a non-porous cemented carbide base combined with a protective layer that chemically bonds to the diamond, ensuring strong adhesion and improved wetting properties during the soldering process.
The technology was developed at Hardide Coatings’ facility in Oxfordshire, following years of research and development. In January 2013, it was recognized with the British Strategic and Technical Committee Award, leading to a £250,000 grant from the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) to support its commercialization. The coating is now protected by both UK and international patents.
Hardide Coatings has also entered into a five-year supply agreement with Sheffield Cutting & Wear Development, a leading expert in hardfacing solutions for the oil and gas industry. This partnership underscores the growing demand for advanced coatings that can meet the evolving needs of modern drilling operations.
As the energy sector continues to push the boundaries of exploration, innovations like this play a vital role in ensuring operational efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability. With its groundbreaking approach, Hardide Coatings is setting a new standard in the field of high-performance drilling tools.
Bandpass Linear Gradient Filter
The Linear Gradient Filter has the ability of high integration, and has the irreplaceable advantage in the miniaturization and lightweight design of spectral instrument.
linear gradient filter using continuous coating method, based on multi-layer wedge-shaped film structure to achieve spatial continuous changes in the filter characteristics. The slope of the film can be adjusted according to the dispersion demand to obtain the target linear rate of change.
