Gas turbulent bearings, also known as gas-lubricated bearings, are a type of plain bearing that uses gas—typically air or an inert gas—as the lubricating medium. These bearings rely on the unique properties of gases such as their low viscosity, high thermal conductivity, and compressibility to create a thin film between moving parts. This film helps reduce friction, support loads, and ensure smooth operation.
Gas turbulent bearings can be categorized into three main types: hydrodynamic bearings, static pressure bearings, and hybrid (combined) bearings. Each type operates based on different principles. Hydrodynamic bearings use the motion of the surfaces to generate pressure within the gas film, while static pressure bearings rely on external pressurized gas to maintain the film. Hybrid bearings combine both approaches for enhanced performance.
One of the key advantages of gas turbulent bearings is their ability to operate at extremely high speeds. For example, helium turbo expanders can reach up to 650,000 revolutions per minute, with linear speeds reaching 238 m/s. The precision of these bearings is significantly higher than that of rolling element bearings, with error homogenization effects contributing to improved accuracy.
Additionally, gas bearings offer minimal friction due to the low viscosity of gases, resulting in much lower resistance compared to oil-based systems. They also have a wide operating temperature range, from as low as 10 K to over 500°C, making them suitable for extreme environments. Another benefit is their non-polluting nature, as they typically use air or inert gases that do not contaminate the surrounding environment.
Despite these benefits, gas bearings also have some limitations. Their load-carrying capacity is generally lower than that of oil-lubricated bearings, which can restrict their use in certain applications. Additionally, they require precise manufacturing and clean operating conditions, increasing production costs and maintenance demands.
In machine tools, gas bearings are commonly used to support high-speed spindles, such as those found in workpieces, cutting tools, and grinding wheels. They are especially useful in ultra-high-speed machining, where they can improve precision by up to two orders of magnitude. With proper design and application, gas bearings provide long life, low noise, and excellent performance in demanding environments.
