As the concept of energy efficiency and emission reduction gains more attention, energy-saving products are gradually becoming a popular choice among consumers. However, the market is flooded with substandard "short-life" energy-saving lamps that not only fail to deliver on their promise of saving energy and money but also discourage people from trusting energy-efficient solutions. Experts point out that these inferior products have created a negative perception in the industry, making it difficult for genuine, high-quality energy-saving lamps to gain trust.
Many consumers end up in a frustrating cycle where they buy energy-saving lamps expecting lower electricity bills, only to find that the lamps burn out quickly and do not provide real savings. For instance, a Harbin resident named Song Guoqing shared his experience: “This energy-saving lamp was supposed to last a long time, but it broke down just a month after I bought it. I didn’t save much on my electricity bill, and I ended up spending more than I should have.â€
In recent years, China has been promoting energy-saving lamps more aggressively, and the idea of “saving energy and saving money†has started to resonate with many. However, due to the overwhelming presence of low-quality products, some consumers end up purchasing expensive, short-lived lamps that don't live up to their promises.
During a visit to several lighting stores in Harbin, reporters found that the energy-saving lamp market is highly inconsistent, with quality varying significantly between products. Some lamps cost nearly ten times more than others, yet the difference in performance isn't always clear. Many buyers, drawn by low prices, end up buying inferior products and falling into the trap of “energy saving without actual savings.â€
“I know that cheap energy-saving lamps might not be reliable, but the ones priced at tens of dollars are still too expensive for my family,†said Mr. Sun, who was shopping for energy-saving lamps. “A while ago, I heard about government-subsidized half-price lamps available in the community, but when I went to check, they were already sold out.â€
According to reports from government-subsidized energy-saving lamp sales points in Nangang District of Harbin, the lamps were quickly sold out during the “Energy-Saving Lamps Enter Every Home†campaign. Many residents were left disappointed, unsure if they would get a chance to purchase the discounted lamps again.
With nearly 80% of the products in the market failing to meet quality standards, it's no surprise that substandard energy-saving lamps remain so widespread. The chaotic state of the market has caught the attention of local authorities. In Heilongjiang Province, a recent quality inspection of energy-saving lamps revealed that over 77.5% of the products failed to meet required standards.
This issue isn't limited to Heilongjiang. Across major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shaanxi, similar quality checks have shown disappointing results. According to Wang Benqi from the Heilongjiang Hardware and Electrical Products Quality Supervision and Inspection Station, common problems include poor mechanical strength, inaccurate power ratings, low initial light output, and unsatisfactory color characteristics, all of which can lead to eye strain or reduced efficiency.
To address this, government departments need to increase oversight of production and sales, ensuring that only high-quality energy-saving lamps reach consumers. Only then can the true benefits of energy efficiency be realized, and the public’s confidence in green technology restored.
