Incandescent lamps operate based on the principles of thermal heating and thermal radiation. The most basic form of an incandescent light bulb involves passing a sufficient amount of electric current through a filament, usually made of tungsten. As the filament heats up to extremely high temperatures, it begins to glow, producing visible light. However, this process can be quite energy inefficient, and the lifespan of such a lamp is often short due to the rapid evaporation of the filament over time.

One key improvement is the use of a vacuum or inert gas-filled glass enclosure, which reduces the oxidation of the filament and slows down its degradation. Another important feature is the use of halogen gases, which help extend the life of the filament by enabling a chemical reaction that redeposits evaporated tungsten back onto the filament. This not only improves efficiency but also allows the bulb to operate at higher temperatures, resulting in a brighter and more consistent light output. These innovations have made incandescent lamps more practical and longer-lasting than their early counterparts, even though they are gradually being replaced by more energy-efficient lighting technologies like LEDs.
