China's photovoltaic talent shortage

Among the more than 1,200 higher vocational colleges across the country, fewer than 30 offer specialized programs in photovoltaic power generation technology. According to Professor Dai Yuzhao, chairman of the New Energy Education and Training Committee under the Ministry of Education, there is a significant shortage of skilled professionals in this field. As a result, many companies have to recruit graduates from related disciplines like electronics or chemical engineering and then provide them with on-the-job training. Most roles in the photovoltaic industry require interdisciplinary knowledge, and the demand for highly qualified graduates remains strong.

A senior official from a leading solar energy company also highlighted the situation, stating that while the photovoltaic sector is experiencing rapid growth and its applications are expanding into new areas, the industry still faces a critical shortage of trained professionals. The annual talent gap is estimated to be around 200,000 people, which poses a major challenge for sustainable development and innovation in the sector.

This shortage not only affects the pace of project implementation but also limits the ability of companies to fully leverage the potential of solar energy. Experts suggest that increasing investment in education and training programs tailored to the needs of the renewable energy industry could help bridge this gap. With the right policies and support, the future of solar energy can be more secure and promising.
