The £490 million ElecLink project stands as one of Europe's key projects of common interest, enabling the UK to tap into the European electricity market. This innovative venture involves a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable capable of transmitting 1000 megawatts, stretching from France to the UK and passing through the iconic Channel Tunnel. Unlike traditional methods, ElecLink aims to achieve this with minimal environmental impact—no overhead lines or undersea cables—while projecting a carbon reduction of 6.1 million tonnes. Over its operational lifespan, it is anticipated to yield a net social benefit of €640 million, making it a win-win for both the environment and consumers.
Behind this ambitious project lies an equally impressive feat of engineering: the specialized cranes designed for pairing and operated from a centralized control board, ensuring the operator remains at a safe distance from the load. These cranes are mounted on a half-kilometer-long train composed of 24 twenty-meter-long work platforms, each equipped with integrated systems featuring our cranes, hoists, and magnets. Additionally, there are 36 semi-automatic drilling machines capable of creating 144 holes in a single sequence, complemented by 24 hydraulic-powered handlers aiding in the installation of high-voltage cables along the 50-kilometer length of the Channel Tunnel wall. The trains run on self-contained batteries with a massive 1750 kWh capacity, significantly contributing to the project's zero-emission goals.
Our crane specifications include 48 UK-manufactured over-braced channel profile jib cranes fitted with GIS GPM 110v electric chain hoists and bespoke Eclipse magnets. Each crane boasts a safe working load (SWL) of 250 kg, an arm length of 2000 mm, and an overall height of 2400 mm. They come with a galvanized finish, two-position locking devices for securing the arms during transport and operation, and a stainless steel festoon system to carry the power supply and control cables for the hoists and magnets. The hoists are GIS GPM IP65 110v electric chain hoists with eye suspension, paired with textile chain buckets and KTL-plated components to withstand harsh conditions. The magnets, crafted by Bespoke Eclipse Magnetics in the UK, round out this state-of-the-art equipment.
Will Dunn, Sales Director at LES, shared his thoughts: “Securing the opportunity to supply such a monumental project last year was incredibly rewarding. Over the past 12 months, my team and I worked tirelessly alongside our client to ensure every detail was meticulously addressed. Prototypes were designed, constructed, and rigorously tested to endure the high-speed movement of the trains and the unforgiving British winters when stored outdoors. Seeing the final product come to fruition fills us with immense pride.â€
